A writer, promoter, and DJ, John Alex Colón, a.k.a. Droopy, has been well-served by his Chicago roots and discerning ear. Early interest in a wide range of literature and music led to a rabid consumption of words and notes, from Shakespeare and Alinsky, to Mahler and Moroder. He discovered electronic music through his parents' love for salsa, disco, and Chicago house, and began his DJ training in 1991. An avid writer, he documented the raves and events he attended and soon found his reviews published by the Chicago-based 100o Words magazine. As assistant editor of the magazine's music section, he developed reviews and features, an editorial column, and a section devoted to the then-burgeoning US interest in drum 'n' bass and trip-hop.
Combining these interests, he started DJing at the magazine’s legendary afterhours parties. This led to bookings at raves, bars, and clubs, including Smart Bar, Metro, and House of Blues. An interest in event promotions followed, and, as a member of VBNTS and the cofounding of Simple Pleasures, developed events within Chicago, featuring artists such as Dan Bell, Justin Long, Evol Intent, Proem, Machinedrum, Danny the Wildchild, and Ming & FS.
Droopy continued his journalistic pursuits, writing for the seminal, but now-defunct Revolution and Selekta, currently for Newcity Chicago. He holds monthly residencies and promotes events at Chicago's Subterranean and Martini Ranch. House, techno, drum 'n' bass, and downtempo are the genres on which he's currently focused, disseminating music reviews, articles, and a monthly DJ mix through his blog, Droopzilla.
